Windows 10 could not just get the hang of it. Of late, users have been reporting an issue with the optimization tool that started with the recent update. It was noticed that the tool failed to record the drive fragmentation time correctly and users could not figure out the last optimization time. It was also reported that the tool performed automatic drive optimizations or defragmentations much more than it was supposed to, which can be a threat to SSD.
SSD, solid-state drive, unlike its predecessor HDD, does not have any movable disc and a header. In HDD, Hard disk drive, defragmentation is a useful activity. It re-organises files which leads to faster data access. It groups the data and stores it to a certain section on the disc which makes it easier for the head to read it. The solid-state drive does not have any mechanical head and can access data stored at any section of the drive at an amazing speed. Thus, defragmentation would prove futile on SSD, as it can read/access any block of data spread out on the drive as fast as it can access data on the adjacent block to one another. However, defragging a heavily fragmented SSD once in a month might have some benefits. They have a smarter way to keep track and organize the files stored on it with a technique called “Wear Levelling”. Defragging such drives frequently, more than what is optimal would lessen the longevity and the lifespan of SSD. Until, Windows fixes this issue with Optimization tool, and if you have an SSD equipped system, you can turn off the automatic defragmentation.
